Coloring inside the lines used to be a way for children to learn dexterity, while also entertaining them— quietly. It was a babysitter’s fail-safe.

But now, the coloring trend has been extended to adults with pages that tackle more intricate topics like Zen, fashion and even adulting. The result is a resurgence of coloring books—much more complicated coloring books— aimed at relaxing and entertaining a more mature audience.

Just because kids these days are preoccupied with their video games and smartphones doesn’t mean that the age-old pastime of coloring books has to be retired. For adults, the activity is one of relaxation and reminiscence.
